A renewed European development policy in response to the UN 2030 Agenda:
Revising the European Consensus on Development

18 July 2016 / 1:15 – 2:30 pm / UN Headquarters, Conference Room 7
Organised by the European Commission

The European Union is committed to playing its full part in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, across
both its internal and external policies, and to working constructively with our international partners to this end.
EU development cooperation will play an important part in this regard.

The EU and its Member States are considering how the current development policy framework – the “European
Consensus on Development” – could best be updated in the light of the universal 2030 Agenda. A public
consultation to exchange views with stakeholders and partners has already been launched.

In this context, the European Commission is organising a side-event on the occasion of the High Level Political
Forum on Sustainable Development, bringing together eminent speakers for a forward-looking discussion on
how EU development policy can best respond to the new international agenda as defined by the 2015 summits
and conferences, and also to the rapid changes happening in the world.

The aim of this event is

• To develop a mutual understanding on how EU development policy could take into account the 2030 Agenda and the emerging global challenges.
• To identify ways to engage in different types of development partnerships, arising from the increased diversity of our partner countries (increasingly differentiated circumstances, capacities, capabilities and needs).
• To explore more effective synergies between EU development cooperation, the United Nations and International Financial Institutions in light of their respective plans to respond to the 2030 agenda.

Moderators: Manish Bapna, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, World Resource Institute
